Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how I Hate Trivia and iHateTrivia.com ("I Hate Trivia," "we," "us," or "our") collect, use, disclose, and retain information when you use our website, games and related services (the "Service"). The short version: we need some data to run a multiplayer game. We do not need your autobiography.

1. Information We Collect

  • Player and game information: player name, room participation, answers, scores, game settings, categories, progress, and Daily Trivia results.
  • Content you submit: custom-trivia prompts, support messages, feedback, and other text you choose to provide.
  • Device and usage information: IP address, browser and device type, operating system, timestamps, referring pages, interactions, crash or diagnostic information, and similar logs.
  • Cookies and similar technologies: local storage used for game state and preferences, and advertising or measurement technologies described below.

2. How We Use Information

We use information to create and join rooms; operate, personalize, and troubleshoot games; generate and moderate custom trivia; provide support; prevent fraud, cheating, and abuse; measure and improve the Service; show and measure advertising; comply with law; and enforce our Terms of Service.

3. Player Names and Multiplayer Visibility

Your chosen player name, answers or answer status, scores, and rankings may be visible to other people in the same room or on a leaderboard. Do not use a player name that reveals information you do not want other players to see. Yes, "DefinitelyNotJake" still tells them something.

4. How We Disclose Information

We may disclose information to:

  • Other players as necessary for multiplayer gameplay and scoreboards.
  • Service providers that provide hosting, databases, security, email, support, and technical infrastructure.
  • Google for AdSense advertising and related measurement, when enabled.
  • OpenAI to generate or moderate custom-trivia content submitted to those features.
  • Authorities or other parties when reasonably necessary to comply with law, protect rights and safety, investigate fraud or abuse, or respond to a valid legal request.
  • A successor in connection with a merger, financing, reorganization, sale, or transfer of all or part of the Service, subject to appropriate protections.

We do not sell personal information for money. Some privacy laws may define personalized advertising as a "sale" or "sharing" of information; see Section 9 for available choices.

5. Advertising, Cookies, and Local Storage

Google and other advertising partners may place or read cookies, use web beacons or IP addresses, and use information about visits to this or other sites to serve, limit, and measure ads. Google's advertising cookies may enable Google and its partners to personalize ads based on visits to this Service and other sites. You can manage Google ad personalization through Google Ads Settings and learn how Google uses partner-site information at Google's partner-sites page.

You can control cookies through your browser, but blocking essential storage may break room recovery, preferences, or other features. A cookie revolt has consequences.

6. Legal Bases for Processing

Where the law requires a legal basis, we process information as necessary to perform our contract with you; based on our legitimate interests in operating, securing, and improving the Service; with your consent, where requested; and as necessary to comply with legal obligations. You may withdraw consent at any time, without affecting earlier processing.

7. Data Retention

We retain information for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described here, including as needed for security, dispute resolution, backups, tax or accounting rules, and other legal obligations. Game and diagnostic records may be kept for shorter operational periods. Custom prompts and support correspondence may be retained while needed to provide, moderate, improve, or defend the Service. When information is no longer needed, we delete or de-identify it where reasonably practicable.

8. Security and International Processing

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards. No internet service is perfectly secure, so we cannot promise absolute security. We and our providers may process information in the United States and other countries whose laws may differ from those where you live. Where required, we use recognized transfer safeguards.

9. Your Privacy Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or a copy of personal information; object to or opt out of certain processing, targeted advertising, sale, or sharing; withdraw consent; and appeal a denied request. You may also have the right to complain to a local privacy regulator.

To make a request, email triviahater@gmail.com and describe the information or activity involved. We may ask for information needed to verify your identity and authority. Authorized agents may submit requests where permitted by law. We will not discriminate against you for exercising a privacy right.

10. Children's Privacy

The Service is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. Children under 13 may not submit personal information. If we learn that we collected personal information from a child under 13 without legally valid parental consent, we will take reasonable steps to delete it. A parent or guardian who believes a child provided information should contact us. Users who are minors where they live should use the Service only with permission from a parent or legal guardian.

11. Third-Party Services and Links

Third-party services process information under their own terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of websites or services we do not control.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy. We will post the revised version and change the effective date, and will provide additional notice when required by law. Material changes apply prospectively unless the law permits otherwise.
